This is an email I received tonight from the chair of the geology department at UCR. Thought you might enjoy it as much as I did.
**NOTE: Larissa is a famous geomorphologist at our school and her office floor is tile....
Students, Staff and Faculty:
Please be sure to lock the doors to your offices when you leave! Even if you are just going to a meeting and will be right back...lock your doors.
This afternoon Larissa walked into her office and to her surprise found a student sleeping in the floor of her office. When she woke him he said his name was Brian and he is a second year physic major. She asked him what he was doing there and He told her he visits the geology building frequently and wonders around looking for unlocked doors to offices to hang out in. He did not steal anything out of her office or bother any of her things. She warned him he was not allowed to do this and he will be turned over to the police if it was to happen again.
I have contacted the police department but they said if the door was left unlocked he technically did not commit a crime. Only if he broke in to the office. I have also notified the supervisor of the custodians to make sure they are locking up after they clean.
We all know that this building has tons of theft and random people trying to steal things from offices and labs. Please be aware of people coming in and out of your offices and labs.
